When cousin's Rizandro Moller and Yannis Beukes visit each other, the ground shakes.
Commando Elite, Namibia's top B-Boy pair have been dancing since the ages of nine and 10, yet they show no signs of slowing down, rehearsing a relentless seven hours daily. The hard work definitely paid off when they took the title of Namibia's best B-Boy crew in the Red Bull Street Dance Battle held at the Windhoek Show last week.
Beating out four crews throughout the week long competition, the Commando Elite crew stood out for bringing something new to their routines daily, including some gravity defying stunts that had even their competitors’ fans cheer them on.
No stranger to competitive dance, the two have graced stages of Talent Quest, broken it down at the Sprite Urban Dance Competition and were most recently seen on the Trustco Star Performer television show. They progressed well at these events, though eventually falling out near the final stages. They didn’t let that get them down and it only stoked their desire to become the best.
“After so many no's, this is such a good feeling to finally get a yes” says Yannis.
They cite Michael Jackson as one of the main inspirations, but go on to say that they learn more through competing and studying different styles of dance. Their passion for performing is so strong that Rizandro has devoted himself to the art full time, while Yannis is currently in Grade 11 at Delta Secondary School.
The two walked away with cash prizes totalling N$6 000. They thanked their families and friends for the support and for believing in them. Also thanked were the organisers and sponsors, most especially Nadja Heger for inviting them to take part in the competition after spotting them at a prior performance.
