College lecturers turn to NUNW

LECTURERS at Namibia’s four teachers’ training colleges have called on the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) to negotiate their salary demands with Government.

The Namibia National Teachers’ Union (Nantu) last week told the lecturers that it doesn’t have enough members at the colleges to represent them. A union needs the support of 50 per cent plus one worker at an institution to qualify as bargaining agent. On Wednesday last week, Nantu Secretary General Basilius Haingura informed the lecturers that the only way their salary scales could be adjusted would be as part of a re-grading process for all civil servants. This angered the lecturers, who wrote a letter to NUNW Secretary General Evilastus Kaaronda, asking him to take over their case.Kaaronda yesterday told The Namibian that he had received the letter from the lecturers and met with their representative on Friday.A union needs the support of 50 per cent plus one worker at an institution to qualify as bargaining agent. On Wednesday last week, Nantu Secretary General Basilius Haingura informed the lecturers that the only way their salary scales could be adjusted would be as part of a re-grading process for all civil servants. This angered the lecturers, who wrote a letter to NUNW Secretary General Evilastus Kaaronda, asking him to take over their case.Kaaronda yesterday told The Namibian that he had received the letter from the lecturers and met with their representative on Friday.
