Cold front heads for southern Namibia, temperatures set to tumble

Namibians in the southern parts of the country should brace themselves for a drop in temperatures over the next few days as a cold front begins to make its way to the country.

Chief forecaster at the Namibia Meteorological Services Odillo Kgobetsi says a prefrontal system currently developing over the Cape Town area is expected to push cooler air northward, resulting in significantly colder conditions across southern Namibia.

“In the next two days there will be a bit of cooling then setting in over the south. A prefrontal system will then set in over parts of Cape Town and will bring in some cooler air in the southern part of the country,” he says.

Last week, the South African Weather Service warned that a cold front is expected to impact several provinces, starting from 28 May. The weather service issued a level 2 warning for damaging winds over the Western Cape and Northern Cape provinces.

“We should expect cooler air over the weekend, also spreading towards the central and eastern parts of the country. A little bit of a mask,” Kgobetsi says.

Meanwhile, weather conditions in the rest of Namibia are expected to be normal.

“Temperatures will become mild, so in the range of 18 going up to 22 degrees Celsius.”

Kgobetsi says over the next few days, the northern part of the country will be cloudy.

“We should expect temperatures to be relatively warm in general over the interior, and hot in places over the far northern regions. The coast in general should expect mild to warm conditions, with some fog patches in the mornings,” Kgobetsi says.
