Coca-Cola Namibia to investigate retailer for selling expired cooldrinks on sale

Coca-Cola Namibia is investigating Ondangwa’s Puma Onamulunga filling station for allegedly selling expired 1.25-liter Coca-Cola bottles for N$10, reduced from N$25.

The cooldrinks, seen by The Namibian, had a sell-by date of 7 March.

Filling station supervisor Monika Ndjembo has confirmed that the retailer reduced the price two weeks ago as the expiry date drew closer.

“Yes, I can confirm that the beverages were expired, the employees who were on shift that day were new staff members and might not have been aware that the expired ones were supposed to be removed from the valid stock,” she says.

The price was first reduced to N$17 and later to N$10.

She says the matter was beyond her control and apologised to the public.

“The aim was to finish the stock,” she says.

Coca-Cola Namibia Bottling Company spokesperson Ockert Jansen says the company is committed to upholding the highest standards of product quality.

“We are currently investigating the incident and we will take appropriate corrective action in line with our established procedures,” he says.

Windhoek-based health inspector Emmanuel Joseph says by law any expired products are not allowed to be on the shelves.

“It can expose or risk people to food poisoning,” he says.
