Coca Cola Athletics first leg in Otjiwarongo

THE athletics season got into swing with the first leg of the Coca Cola Securitas meeting taking place in Otjiwarongo last Saturday.

The performances were not very good with none coming close to existing Namibian records, but there were still some exciting races.

Dantago Gurirab of Golden Cheetahs Athletics Club won the men’s 100m final in 10,76 seconds, finishing just ahead of Ernt Narib of Nampol Athletics Club in 10,76 and Sandro Diergaardt of Rehoboth Athletics Club (10,81).

Mbaandja Humavindu of Unam Athletics Club won the women’s 100m in 13,64 seconds, followed by Queen Gom-Khais of Swakop Striders (14,00) and Rauha Isak of Cheetahs in 17,27.

The men’s 200m didnt have a final but there were three heats, with Narib winning the first heat in 22,00; Even Tjiviju of Namibia Correctional Services winning the second heat in 22,68 and Sidney Kamuaruuma of Namib Lions winning the third heat in 22,06 seconds.

There were also two heats in the women’s 200m with Humavindu winning the first one in 27,78 and Tjipekapora Herunga of Nampol the second in 25,67.

In the men’s 400m the two heat winners were Mahmad Bock of Unam (51,05) and Leevi Stefanus of Olupale Athletics Club in 51,59, while the heat winners in the women’s 400m were Shekupe Gustaf of Namibia Correctional Services in 1:00,62 and Tangi Mulundu in 1:03,95.

Gustaf also won the women’s 800m in 2:27,33, while Teofelus Lisias of Cheetahs won the men’s 800m in 2:00,40.

Chantelle Louw of the QSB WHS Athletics Club won the women’s 400m hurdles in 1:17,57.

In the men’s field events, Juan Smith of the QSB WHS Athletics Club won the javelin in 59,20m; Sandro Diergaardt of Rehoboth won the long jump in 7,33m; Coenie Kune of QSB WHS Athletics Club won the shot put in 13,37m, Ryan Williams of QSB WHS Athletics Club won the discus throw in 41,77m, and Wenceslaus Klaasman of Nampol won the high jump in 2,05m.

In the women’s field events, Karlien Botha of the QSB Windhoek Hochland Sport Athletics Club won three gold medals – in the the shot put with a distance of 11,29m; in the javelin in 26,20m, as well as the discus in 35,65m; Meriam Minin of Unam won the high jump in 1,45m; and Globine Mayova of Nampol won the long jump in 4,89m.

The second leg of the series will take place in Swakopmund this coming Saturday, 2 March.
