The SFC Youth Football Academy is hosting their Annual Youth Football Tournament at Swakopmund this weekend, providing a platform for over 50 teams of young players to come together and celebrate their love for the game.
As one of the largest events of its kind at the coast, the tournament invites young players from five-year-old beginners to rising Namibian football stars in the under-17 category.
SFC Youth Football Academy secretary Jimi Hill says a unique aspect of this event is that games are played on different surfaces.
The Swakopmund Football Club (SFC) offers players the opportunity to compete on three different types of fields, including sand, traditional grass and indoors to expose them to a wide variety of play-styles.
“Today is not about winning, it’s about uplifting the players, it’s about the community coming together to celebrate the great game of football,” Hill adds.
The SFC aims to guide young football enthusiasts as they grow in their ability. While the youngest players are focused on developing a love of the sport, games between the older participants place increasing emphasis on the tactical and technical aspects.
Tournaments like this one enable young people to come together, learn from each other and create a sense of community.
“This tournament plays a vital role in promoting grassroots football and nurturing young talent from across the region and Namibia. We are proud to welcome a wide range of youth clubs, all contributing to the growth of the sport and the development of our future football stars,” the academy vice president, James Camm, states.
Coach Kali of the SP football club in Windhoek explains that his club travels to the coast to participate in this tournament annually, and that the children always consider it a highlight.
“We are very excited to take part in this tournament. We also have some new kids – it’s a new environment for them and we are with the parents, they are all happy to be here at this tournament. We love it here,” he says.
