Coastal Coffee – 4 Great Spots

Today is International Coffee Day and when it comes to indulging in the heavenly brew, Swakopmunders are truly spoiled for choice.

Whether you’re a coffee purist and like your java meticulously brewed or prefer the beverage as the base for creative combinations, coffee at the coast combines the freshness of local roasteries with the diverse cafe and culinary culture the town is famed for.

If you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate and sip this International Coffee Day, these coastal spots have you covered.

The birthday babe of the bunch, this month Slowtown is celebrating 10 years in the business. Born at the coast before branching out to its popular Windhoek locations, Slowtown’s Swakopmund roastery fuels a vibey, cosmopolitan spot where your views are the town’s bustling centre and the iconic red and white lighthouse. The ethos expounded here is “the art of slowing down”and Slowtown’s speedy baristas will make sure your coffee is perfectly pulled as you relax, people watch and munch on your pick of brownies, cakes, filled croissants and more. Head here for a diverse crowd, excellent cappuccinos and the friendliest service.

If your brew would go down even better with a smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel, Bojos is the place to perch. Inviting in its cluster of low wooden tables, bright white umbrellas and vibrant view of Daniel Tjongarero Avenue, Bojos is always serving slices of its popular baked cheesecake and a sexy European street café aesthetic. A little touch that you’ll love? Bojos’ espressos are served with a glass of water. At many cafés water is used as a palate cleanser before your first sip so you can truly taste the complexity of the drink. Pop in for a sunny and sophisticated afternoon.

Quirk and caffeine are the name of the game at Swakopmund’s beloved Village Café. While some coffee spots prefer their drinks clean and classic, Village Café is all about “fun, fancy coffee”. The list of their offbeat offerings includes a peanut and honey latte, minty mocha, cardamom latte, a spiked mocha with coffee liqueur and the chilli mocha. For those who prefer their caffeine as local as it is lekker, Village Café serves a Boerekoffie with condensed milk and a Kampkoffie with a shot of Amarula. While serious coffee drinkers are a famously traditionalist troop, the Village Café’s colourful courtyard and eccentric interiors are a place to take happy photos and just have fun with it.

The sign at the front of Cordes & Co reads “The Best Coffee in Town” and if you enjoy your coffee brewed by local roasters Two Beards and a Saint, you’ll likely agree with the boast. Beyond the great coffee, Cordes & Co is also the spot for a wealth of sweet treats. Serving the most delicious macarons, tarts and cakes in an airy and aesthetic courtyard, Cordes & Co is kid friendly, savvy about breakfast and looks great for Instagram.

Undoubtedly not all Swakopmund has to offer to celebrate International Coffee Day, these coastal coffee spots will charm you with their look and feel, impress you with their eats and serve you with a smile.
