Security forces fire tear gas, flash bangs and rubber bullets in downtown Los Angeles after United States president Donald Trump sent in National Guard troops to quell protests against immigration raids.
The clashes near the Edward R Roybal Federal Building, the Metropolitan Detention Centre and the 101 Freeway come on the third day of Trump’s immigration crackdown, with dozens of people, including undocumented migrants, rounded up.
The governor says he will sue the Trump administration over the deployment of the National Guard after the White House rejected his appeal to rescind the order.
Marc Christopher, an immigration lawyer, says the people of Los Angeles are angry with the “brutality” of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.
“They’re seeing people being taken away by masked armed individuals. Many of these people have no criminal record. They’ve been in the community for a long time. Many of them have applications pending with the US Citizen and Immigration Services,” he said from the city of Milwaukee.
“And I think what is extremely disturbing is we are seeing children being handcuffed. We are seeing teachers being taken into custody. So they’re already mad about that, and then you add to that mix, armed guards, National Guard and tear gas, it’s only going to inflame the situation.”
