City tackles traffic jam near Maerua Mall

THE Windhoek municipality will soon start widening Jan Jonker Road near the Maerua Mall shopping complex at the point where it intersects with Robert Mugabe Avenue.

The Windhoek City Council decided on this project during the monthly Council meeting last week. The area where the present mini-golf (putt-putt) course and a restaurant are situated will be flattened to become a large parking area. The restaurant is closed permanently and no activities are taking place there.A developer applied to erect some office building and shops close by.This was granted, provided a betterment fee of over N$3 million is paid. The City of Windhoek will also ease traffic flow at the turn-off to the defunct mini-golf course by widening the intersection. The City had commissioned a study on how to best improve the traffic flow past Maerua Mall, which was completed in July this year.About N$1,5 million was set aside for that project.
