City police protect Windhoek council chambers

Windhoek City Police officers have been deployed to guard a city council meeting, following the disruption of a previous council meeting.

City of Windhoek spokesperson Harold Akwenye on Thursday confirmed that new security measures have been put in place during monthly city council meetings in the council chambers.

Akwenye said this was due to a previous incident during which people stormed into the council chambers and threatened officials.

He added that the police presence is for the protection of city council members and residents attending the council meeting.

City police chief Leevi Iileka told The Namibian that the move is nothing extraordinary.

“Just a general improvement of the security in and around the city council headquarters,” Iileka said.
