The officer was arrested on Monday on three counts of rape which is dealt with by the court in accordance with the Combating of Domestic Violence Act of 2003. A CITY Police officer accused of raping a 16-year-old girl between May and November this year was on Tuesday denied bail at the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court in Katutura.
Omar Saleem Jossob was denied bail when he made his first appearance before magistrate Niina Hochobes.
Bail was denied because the matter is at an early stage; witness statements are outstanding and it is not in the interest of justice and the public for bail to be granted.
Jossob was, however, told to bring a formal bail application before court if he wanted to be released on bail.
Hochobes thereafter postponed the case to 19 March 2020 to allow for further police investigations.
Prosecutor Cleopatra Boois appeared for the state while the accused was represented by defence lawyer Joseph Garth.

He remains in custody at the Wanaheda Police Station holding cells.
Meanwhile, three women aged 61, 74 and 84 died after the car they were travelling in overturned near Gibeon on Monday.
Police crime investigations coordinator for the Hardap region, deputy commissioner Eric Clay told Nampa on Tuesday the accident occurred around 12h20 on the B1 road, approximately 35 kilometres north of Gibeon.
“It is alleged that the driver of a white Honda Ballade with five occupants, which was travelling towards Mariental, lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road and overturned, killing two of the four passengers on the spot,” he said.
The three other occupants were rushed to the Mariental State Hospital, where one succumbed to her injuries upon arrival.
Clay said the 29-year-old driver and a 30-year-old woman were admitted to the hospital, with the driver in a serious condition.
The next of kin of the deceased were yet to be notified and police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
A seven-year-old girl was on Saturday run over by a vehicle while crossing the road at Ondangwa.
Police spokesperson in the Oshana region, inspector Thomas Aiyambo, told Nampa the accident occurred around 16h54 on the Ondangwa main road near the Rössing Foundation centre. He identified the girl as Elizabeth Angula, who was seriously injured and admitted to the Onandjokwe Lutheran Hospital.
A case of reckless and/or negligent driving has been opened at the Ondangwa Police Station against the 28-year-old driver, who was driving a white Toyota Corolla.
Aiyambo also reported that the Oshana police are searching for unknown suspects that allegedly stole a concrete mixer, worth N$25 000, from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia’s Gloria Day Church at Ongwediva between Thursday and Friday.
“It is alleged that the machine was stolen from the church yard and loaded into a car,” said Aiyambo.
He added that no arrest has been made yet and police investigation into the matter continues. – Nampa
