City of Windhoek honours Nujoma’s legacy

Windhoek mayor Ndeshihafela Larandja has called on residents to honour the legacy of founding president Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma by embracing unity, resilience and hard work.

Larandja made the remarks during the ordinary council meeting held at the council chambers on Tuesday evening, where she reflected on the city’s role in paying tribute to the iconic liberation leader.

“Our nation mourned the loss of Dr Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, our founding president, revolutionary leader, and father of the Namibian nation who transitioned from this earth on 8 February 2025,” Larandja said.

She said the City of Windhoek joined the masses last weekend in honouring Nujoma’s extraordinary legacy of resilience, sacrifice and unwavering leadership.

“Dr Nujoma led Namibia’s fight for independence, and his leadership held the liberation movement together, ensuring victory. From his early political activism to his diplomatic efforts across Africa and beyond, he shaped Namibia’s path to freedom,” she said.

Larandja urged residents to preserve Nujoma’s legacy by upholding the values of justice, self-determination and reconciliation, which he championed throughout his life.

“A great leader never truly leaves us; their vision, wisdom and sacrifices continue to guide and inspire generations to come,” she added.

On behalf of the city, the mayor also expressed condolences to the Nujoma family, saying the late statesman’s legacy is a source of comfort and pride for the nation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family, and we stand in solidarity as we honour his remarkable life and service,” she said.

Larandja further applauded the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, the Khomas Regional Council, City of Windhoek councillors, and staff for their role in ensuring a dignified memorial and funeral service for the founding president.
