City issues over 6 000 land occupation certificates

The City of Windhoek has to date issued over 6 000 land occupation certificates to residents of informal settlements, as part of an initiative aimed at accelerating the provision of land for housing.

This was announced by city mayor Ndeshihafela Larandja on Thursday during the municipality’s monthly ordinary council meeting.

“We must celebrate the progress of this council in strengthening service delivery in the Moses //Garoëb constituency,” she said.

Larandja said over 16 500 structures have been mapped and numbered.

Additionally, 47 new standpipes and 339 communal toilets have been installed, ensuring cleaner and healthier neighbourhoods.

Over 7 000 zinc houses have been connected to electricity, benefiting approximately 35 000 residents, Larandja said.

She added that September has been a month of action, reflection, and renewed commitment.

“It showed us that the challenges we face as a city are not abstract problems, they are lived realities of our residents. Leadership is not only about building infrastructure, but also about restoring dignity, strengthening partnerships, and safeguarding our future,” she said.
