When you think ‘chommie’, you think of a friend. A person who can help you in times of need. And this is the essence of the new app Chommie.
Described as a “fast, easy and affordable way to get tasks done”, this new app helps you deliver items, get your house cleaned and other activities you don’t always have time to do through helpers.
But how does it work? Two ways.
You can request for a chommie, someone who can carry out your tasks and errands, giving you more time to spend with your friends and family. Or you can be the chommie as a way to earn extra money when you’re down and out.
Founded by Kumwe ‘CJ’ Dumeni, Ntando Zaba and George Payne with Ntando Zaba as the head of operations, the app was designed to create a reliable space where anyone in need can hire services such as cleaning, deliveries and more.
“Our mission is to be a personal services app that helps students earn extra money while also positively contributing to the wider community,” a statement by the founders said.
“Student loans and accommodation rates have always had a lasting effect on students and so we feel passionate about providing a solution.”
The team’s objective is to create a community marketplace where people can use their skills to provide personal services and earn a bit of cash – creating a platform to find helpers.
Each chommie goes through a vetting process to ensure your safety and security, and don’t worry about any money going missing – every transaction is carefully monitored.
But if you’re the one who needs help, the process is simple: Describe the task you’re interested in, add your budget (as your helper is hired according to an agreed rate) and the system will match you with someone adequate.
“The algorithm used for Chommie was created to simplify the freelance hire process,” the statement further said.
Either hire runners (people who do deliveries or pick-ups), fixers (people who offer maintenance, fixing and IT solutions), sitters (people who can queue for you) or movers.
Already described as “a groundbreaking mobile app” by The Media Online, Chommie is currently available on both Android and iOS. And guess what? It’s completely free to download!
Like the tagline says: “Local help. When you need it.”
It is still growing – so make sure you check out updates regularly to see if it is available in your town.
