Swakopmund will host a large gathering of choirs and conductors this Thursday and Friday for a workshop and choir competition.
The events will be presented by two internationally acclaimed personalities from the choir world, Professor Petru Grabe from the University of Pretoria and Renette Bouwer from the University of Johannesburg. The Applous Choir Competition for high schools is wellknown throughout South Africa and Namibia, and is presented by the ATKV (Afrikaanse Taal en Kultuurvereniging).Approximately 70 conductors from Namibia will attend the event, while several choirs will participate in the competition.Choir Director of the Mascato Coastal Youth Choir, Ena Venter, said the events are proof of Namibians’ love for song.’Singing is a form of cultural communication between people, groups and nations which has stood many Namibian choirs in good stead as they build bridges across the borders of their country,’ she said. ‘They could very well be regarded as Namibia’s cultural ambassadors.’
