China to expand trade with Namibia

China says it will be expanding its range of import products from Namibia.

China’s ambassador to Namibia, Zhao Weiping, announced this today during a courtesy visit to president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at State House.

China is a major export market for Namibian resources like uranium and lithium, and the trade relationship includes imports from China.

Weiping said China will be announcing new import trade products from Namibia in the near future.

Currently, China is importing lamb from Namibia, among other products.

“We will announce new imported products China will be importing from Namibia soon,” the ambassador said.

Weiping said this follows the China-Africa Cooperation (Focac) forum last September.

Focac is a multilateral forum that brings together China and African countries to discuss and collaborate on issues related to development and cooperation.

At the forum, president Xi Jingpin said China would provide wider access to the African agriculture sector, Weiping said.

He said China will be opening up to its Global South friends and African countries.

Namibia last year recorded trade surpluses with China, valued at N$2.8 billion.

Weiping said the uranium owned by China Rössing Uranium and Swakop Uranium has contributed to Namibia’s revenue by employing about 6 000 Namibians.

He said it contributes about 70% to the country’s gross domestic product.

China will continue trading with Namibia, the ambassador said, while extending well wishes on behalf of China’s president to Nandi-Ndaitwah.

The president said Namibia is looking forward to strengthening the countries’ bilateral relationship through mutual benefits.

“We are ready to strengthen our bilateral cooperation, which must be based on mutual beneficiation for both countries,” she said.
