Children Should Take School Seriously

This is written as a reminder to all the stakeholders in the education of Namibian children.

At the end of last year, the minister of education, arts and culture said she wasn’t happy with the performance of the country’s grade 11 and 12 pupils.

She expressed her disappointment over 420 pupils who scored zeros on a mathematics examination paper carrying 120 marks.
This has scared me, and I was also disappointed.

The report on this situation appeared in The Namibian and several other publications.

I would like to encourage all stakeholders in education, especially parents and guardians, to put more effort into encouraging pupils to take their studies seriously.

All stakeholders in education need to participate fully in the education of each and every child in Namibia.

By so doing we could avoid a situation where pupils score zero.

There is a need for parents and guardians to create channels of communication between themselves and teachers.

This would enable everyone to assess the performance of pupils before it is too late.

At home pupils need to be given enough time to complete homework on time.

Parents and guardians also need to assist children and encourage them to study hard.

That is the only way to prepare them to face challenges in the future.
