Chef cooks for homeless

HOMELESS people eking out a living at Windhoek’s Eros dumpsite were treated to a meal prepared by Top Score chef Coennie Muundjua on Saturday.

The 41-year-old has worked as a professional chef for 15 years, and has also cooked for pensioners at different towns of the country, including Omaruru and Okakarara.

“I used to cook for the elderly around the country at no cost, I love to cook for those that cannot do that for themselves.”

Muundjua told The Namibian that he was driving by the area when he discovered people searching for food in garbage bags.

“I asked the security guards where these people live and he took me to their shattered plastic shacks. Hearing their stories and how they ended up there, broke my heart,” Muundjua said.

This situation roused Muundjua’s emotions and he pleaded for help from the Top Score brand manager, in the form of a Top Score donation.

Muundjua himself donated N$1 000 of his own funds, while his friends Dirk Mudge and Jaco Mudge donated N$2 000 each.

“Giving back to the community has always been part of me, and watching the condition in which they live is very saddening,” Muundjua said, calling on good Samaritans to assist in any way they can.

“The main thing that these people are suffering from is the lack of water. If anyone wants to give containers of water, I will be able to assist and transport the water to them because they are really in need of water,” he said.

One of the affected homeless people, Mavero Romanus said he felt bad to be eating nice food alone, while his siblings were starving at home.

“We are happy to receive the food, only if the people at home can also have the same food.”

Romanus added that it’s been a very long time since they ‘ve eaten good food.

“The last time I ate food this nice was at my mother’s funeral,” said one of the dumpsite diggers.

Archie Solomon, who also lives at the dumpsite expressed his excitement.

“The last time I had such delicious food was when my mother was still alive, it has been a long time. This food is delicious, thank you so much chef,” said Solomon.
