The Central North Regional Electricity Distributor (Cenored), through its peri-urban electrification programme, has started electrifying houses in the newly established Ekunde Extension four and five residential areas at Okahandja.
Cenored’s spokesperson, Chali Matengu, on Tuesday, said since January, more than 200 households have benefited from the programme at a cost of over N$2.4 million.
He said Cenored is committed to improving the reliability of electricity supply and will, therefore, continue to enhance its services in the Okahandja district, as well as in other informal areas within its operational regions.
“We can assure our customers of our dedication to providing a stable and reliable power supply through continuous investment in infrastructure, swift responses to faults and collaboration with our stakeholders in addressing all supply challenges related to electricity distribution,” said Matengu.
He stated that the company is excited to be part of the electrification programme as the Okahandja Municipality is a proud shareholder in Cenored.
He, however, cautioned residents of Ekunde against vandalising electrical infrastructure and stealing copper cables in the newly electrified area.
Okahandja mayor Beatrice Kotungondo thanked Cenored for donating 5 000 prepaid electricity meter boxes, which are being installed in the new Ekunde houses.
She said a prepaid electricity meter box would normally cost about N$3 000 at Cenored.
“Our plan is to further assist various households in the Five Rand informal area as well. The municipality has recorded about 6 000 households in all of Ekunde 1, 2, 3 and 6, as well as in the Five Rand area, which require prepaid meter boxes,” said Kotungondo.
Ekunde Extension four and five have been proclaimed as formal residential areas, with provision of clean water services, sewage lines, roads and electricity supply.
Kotungondo said approximately 1 100 plots for residential and business purposes have been created in Ekunde Extension four and five.
