Cell thieves jailed

TWO young residents of Grootfontein were taught a tough lesson about the risks of theft yesterday when they were each sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for stealing two cellphones at a bar in the town.

Dagloria Somaes (22) and 18-year-old Eveline Mukaru pleaded guilty when Public Prosecutor Beatrix Hoveka put two charges of theft to them in the Grootfontein Magistrate’s Court. They were accused of stealing two cellphones at the New Age Bar at Grootfontein on August 5.Somaes and Mukaru admitted that they stole the two phones, valued at N$1 500 and N$783 respectively, from a handbag that was on a chair in the bar.They simply wanted to have their own cellphones, the two unemployed young women told Magistrate André le Roux when they were questioned about the reasons for the thefts.The Magistrate sentenced them each to three months’ imprisonment on each of the theft charges – that is, to effective jail terms of six months for each of the two women.Somaes and Mukaru were arrested and charged two days after the thefts.The cellphones were recovered, but in a damaged state.They were accused of stealing two cellphones at the New Age Bar at Grootfontein on August 5.Somaes and Mukaru admitted that they stole the two phones, valued at N$1 500 and N$783 respectively, from a handbag that was on a chair in the bar.
