Cell One rolls out in the North

MOBILE service provider Cell One launched its cellphone service in the North on Monday.

Chief Executive Officer Lars-Christian Iuel said Cell One’s network coverage now extends to all four north-central regions. “We are on track to being true to our ambition of expanding our network coverage throughout Namibia,” he said.Cell One launched its service in Windhoek seven weeks ago.Iuel said the network growth is entering a critical phase in that many more areas will be covered, including remote villages in the North.”It should not be difficult to understand why Cell One has identified Oshakati as the second metropolitan centre to receive its coverage, because as the economic hub of north-central Namibia, Oshakati is increasingly becoming an important centre of trade and commerce – not only locally, but also within the Southern African region,” Iuel said.Cell One has opened a shop at the Game complex in Oshakati and another at the Oluno shopping centre in Ondangwa, where customers can buy cellphones, starter packs and recharge vouchers and get assistance with queries. The regional councillor for Ongwediva, Silverius Ekandjo, said at the launch that the people of Oshana and the other northern regions were rejoicing about the new cellphone service.Speaking on behalf of Oshana Governor Klemens Kashuupulwa, Ekandjo said Cell One was offering people a choice where there was none before.Ekandjo said there were concerns about the lack of network coverage in some parts of Namibia, and that serious attention should be given to this issue. He said many people bought cellphones for use in emergencies, but the lack of network coverage in the most remote places made the devices useless.”We are on track to being true to our ambition of expanding our network coverage throughout Namibia,” he said.Cell One launched its service in Windhoek seven weeks ago.Iuel said the network growth is entering a critical phase in that many more areas will be covered, including remote villages in the North.”It should not be difficult to understand why Cell One has identified Oshakati as the second metropolitan centre to receive its coverage, because as the economic hub of north-central Namibia, Oshakati is increasingly becoming an important centre of trade and commerce – not only locally, but also within the Southern African region,” Iuel said.Cell One has opened a shop at the Game complex in Oshakati and another at the Oluno shopping centre in Ondangwa, where customers can buy cellphones, starter packs and recharge vouchers and get assistance with queries. He said many people bought cellphones for use in emergencies, but the lack of network coverage in the most remote places made the devices useless.
