Celebrity basketball match leaves us wanting more

The game was held on Saturday afternoon at the UN Plaza in Soweto, Katutura, in Windhoek between two other games played as part of the Khomas Basketball Association's KBA Cup finals. Many fans came to support the games and to cheer on their favourite players.

Team Vivo, made up of DJ Castro, DJ Chin Chilla, Skrypt, Maria Nepembe, Paul da Prince, Leathermein, Lavinia Uutoni, Reggie Zaire and Zuluboy, beat their rivals in a surprisingly well-played game.

The second group, Team Shell, contained Leena Shipwata, Auguste Uutoni, CJ Dumeni, Dion Auala, Alois Calazero, KP Illest, Waters, Vii Netumbo, Yeezir and Luis Munana, who was the first player to score points in the match that was orchestrated by Vivo Energy, the Namibian Basketball Federation and Kulture Namibia.

It was an exciting game, with many of the players running up and down the court confused and tired, and others showing impressive athletic ability. Team Vivo walked away with 17 points, just four more than Team Shell's 13.

The other winners of the day were the Unam Sparks who beat Unam Phoenix 65-43 in the women's game, and the Titans who triumphed over the Rebels 54-45.

The celebrity portion of the event was put together to bring Namibian basketball into the spotlight and boost viewership.

“The aim is to elevate the sport. Our five-year plan is to grow the sport to the level of hockey, rugby and hopefully soccer one day, all with the aim of exporting great Namibian talent to the NBA,” said Carlos Gurirab, one of the event organisers.

He added that it was important to him to attract sponsorship and more support to the sport.
