Celebrating Namibian architecture

OCTOBER 1 is World Day of Architecture, which is an initiative of the International Union of Architects (UIA) and is celebrated annually on the first Monday in October.

The theme of this year’s day is ‘Transmitting Zero CO2 Emission Architecture’. The Namibia Institute of Architects invites the public to an exhibition of unrealised virtual works designed by Namibian architects from October 1 to 5 October at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre. The exhibition will also be shown in Swakopmund. The exhibition will be opened by the architect Heinrich Wolff of the Cape Town-based Noero-Wolff Architectural Practice. He will also present a lecture on the theme of this year’s World Architecture Day.The film ‘Life is a breath of air’ by Fabiano Maciel about the life and works of the world-renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer will be shown at the FNCC on October 2.The celebrations end on October 24 with a screening of the films ‘Caracas: The informal city’ and ‘The Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright’ at the Warehouse Theatre in Windhoek. The theme for this year was chosen by the UIA and seeks to put the accent on the architect’s capacity to drastically reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the design, construction and maintenance of buildings and cities.Half of the emissions of this greenhouse gas come from the construction and transportation sectors.
