Cazadores hosts hockey tourney

THE Cazadores Inline Hockey Club will host the first of two annual tournaments this weekend.

The hosts will contest the puck against fellow Windhoek club the Badgers as well as the Scorpions from Otjiwarongo in over 50 games – starting tomorrow at 16h30 to 22h50, Saturday 08h30 to 23h00 and ending on Sunday 09h00 till 13h00. The Badgers Club has entered a record 15 teams for the 11 divisions. The weekend of July 1 to 3 will see DTS Windhoek’s Kamikaze and Coastal Pirates from Swakopmund participating.As an added benefit a few of the Namibian national players will be in action for their clubs before leaving in early July to participate in the FIRS World Championships in Roccaraso, Italy. In addition, the organisers will have personalised wine bottles on sale in order to help generate funds for the national side. The new inline hockey playing format is based on the North American League System which allows for growth in the divisions. Also each team plays two round-robin games to accumulate points for the NIIHA League standings to enable them to qualify for the national championships in November this year and to determine the seedings for the tournament results.For the National Championships only the top three teams from every division will be invited to participate.The organisers promise great entertainment for the whole family at the Cazadores Inline Hockey Club, which is situated opposite the DHPS School in Church Street.The club is renowned for its excellent food and Glühwein and the coveted kiddies’ and farmers’ baskets for which raffle tickets can be bought on both tournament weekends. The draw will be made on July 3. The NIIHA League standings can be viewed on the official website niiha.com.
