Cassinga remembered

THE amphitheatre at the UN Plaza in Katutura was packed to capacity with people who attended the Cassinga Day commemoration on Friday.

About 20 survivors of the Cassinga massacre held a candlelight ceremony and shared with the people what had happened at Cassinga in Angola on May 4 1978. Cassinga survivor, Agnes Kafuta urged Government to bring back the remains of the victims so that they could be buried on home soil.Deputy Prime Minster Libertina Amathila said Government has already collected soil from the mass grave at Cassinga and buried it at Heroes’ Acre in Windhoek.Referring to recent suggestions that there are too many public holidays in Namibia and that some, including Cassinga, should be abolished, she said: “This will never happen”.Cassinga survivor, Agnes Kafuta urged Government to bring back the remains of the victims so that they could be buried on home soil.Deputy Prime Minster Libertina Amathila said Government has already collected soil from the mass grave at Cassinga and buried it at Heroes’ Acre in Windhoek.Referring to recent suggestions that there are too many public holidays in Namibia and that some, including Cassinga, should be abolished, she said: “This will never happen”.
