Carreira resigns as Pirates manager

ORLANDO Pirates team manager Mario Carreira resigned on Friday after a fallout with club management over his role and responsibilities.

A reliable source at the club revealed to The Namibian Sport yesterday that Carreira, who won the league title with the team last season, decided to resign after he had opposing views in the management of the team and his overall responsibilities.
The source said Carreira did not agree with his new responsibilities of purely concentrating on managing the team, instead of also being involved with decisions on a higher level. Carreira could not be reached for comment. The Orlando Pirates Management Committee, which is chaired by Mabos Vries, accepted the resignation of the bulky former premiership administrator, who is said to be hugely unhappy about some responsibilities that have been taken away from him.
Since he joined the team at the start of last season, Carreira has been instrumental in acquiring players for the team and also had a role in the determining the payment of players.
These two key responsibilities have been taken away after the appointment of a formal treasurer for the side in Sakarias Biwa.
Biwa now handles the payment of players and staff at the club according to a decision by the management committee.
Carreira was previously with Civics and he left the side after being lured to Pirates by club owner Hendrik Dawids.
Carreira brought some fine players to the side and landed their first league title after almost 60 years in the history of the club.
Rumours that coach Brian Isaacs has also resigned are unfounded, according to the source, but confirmation was given that the club is looking at bringing in current Mighty Gunners coach Dawid Snewe as an assistant.
Isaacs also serves as the assistant coach of the Brave Warriors under Tom Saintfiet.
