Choosing a career is the most confusing selection one can make, with many choices presenting themselves.
Whose choice is it and what should one consider when choosing a career? Should one follow the career path directed to him/her by a parent or maybe a friend? The fact that your friend is going for a certain course and you want to be close to her, is it necessary to decide on doing the same course as her? Will it bring you happiness or dissatisfaction? The few questions I presented here are actually intended to fuel discussions among the youth. Feel free to apply the ideas under discussion to your own situation.
Choosing a career requires a crucial assessment and clearly defining a certain career, considering multiple different sources that lead to the understanding of a career choice. It is best to choose a career that satisfies, rather than a career that brings emptiness.
I personally believe that choosing a career is in one’s own hands. We all know our strengths and weaknesses, so with this knowledge, it is important to decide on a career that suits us best, a career that brings real fulfilment, a career that helps ourselves by helping others, a career that will contribute to making Namibia a better country by investing our skills, a career that will cause us no anxiety disorders.
When choosing a career, consider the different open doors and obstacles towards a specific career for yourself. Set goals for yourself to reach, take responsibility for your learning and have your own personal motivation. Do not go for a career because someone said so or because of money, this is personally disruptive and so the outcome is a condition or crisis.
Choose a career that will bring you no regrets.
I did not fail to listen to parents’ or friends’ views on career choices. It is said that “two heads are better than one”, however, some religious words says “do not give your heart to all the words that people may speak”. Follow their advice in a filtering way. Yes, they can help you, but you need to stay true to yourself.
Psychology? Law? Economics? Engineering? Accounting? Social work? Education? Archives? Tourism? It is your own choice. Choose wisely for personal happiness.
Finally, I would like to wish all the first years a good start, please do not let contrary talks break your spirit and know who you are.
