Call to act on Darfur

Call to act on Darfur

WINDHOEK – The National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) Youth League has called on the Namibian Government to take bold, decisive measures to ensure that genocide does not take place in Darfur, Sudan.

In a media release yesterday, the Youth League charged that the people of Darfur were being slaughtered by the government-supported Arab janjaweed militia, and that Namibia had been too silent on the issue. “From experience, we know very well what is happening in Darfur is not new to us, as it happened to us as well. The genocide of 1904 by Germans and the apartheid South Africa, so why are we still quiet about Darfur?” it asked. The Youth League said that despite a commitment by world leaders to halt such mass slaughter, people continue to be targeted for violence and murder solely because of their ethnic origin.”We demand that Namibia, SADC and AU put pressure on the government of Sudan to accept the UN force in the country….We [also] call on the government of Sudan to stop organising demonstrations against the UN force,” the statement said.Nampa”From experience, we know very well what is happening in Darfur is not new to us, as it happened to us as well. The genocide of 1904 by Germans and the apartheid South Africa, so why are we still quiet about Darfur?” it asked. The Youth League said that despite a commitment by world leaders to halt such mass slaughter, people continue to be targeted for violence and murder solely because of their ethnic origin.”We demand that Namibia, SADC and AU put pressure on the government of Sudan to accept the UN force in the country….We [also] call on the government of Sudan to stop organising demonstrations against the UN force,” the statement said.Nampa
