Cabinet secretary urges regional leaders to act as heavy rains flood Rundu, Oshakati

Cabinet secretary Emilia Mkusa has urged regional councils to start with contingency planning measures for the rainy season.

In a rainfall advisory issued on Tuesday, Mkusa said Namibia is expected to receive rainfall ranging from below normal to above normal until next year.

She added that the regional disaster risk management committees must start relocating communities living in flood-prone areas to prevent loss of life.

“They must start activating early warning information dissemination through all available regional platforms,” she said.

Mkusa added that the committees must enhance preparedness and response measures at both regional and local authority levels in line with the advisory.

“Lastly, this advisory should be widely shared with all sectors and should be shared with the communities without delay to strengthen readiness,” she said.

Since last week Rundu, Oshakati, Ondangwa, and Tsumeb have experienced heavy rainfall, causing homes and clinics to be submerged and some streets to be damaged.
