Busy weekend ahead for Southern stream

The battle for total supremacy in the Southern Stream First Division (SSFD) will take centre stage on 28 March between log leaders Mariental Sports Club and foe Young Brazilians FC.

Though Young Brazilians FC boasts depth and experience coming from the Namibia Premier Football League, log leaders Mariental Sports Club, under the tutelage of coach Mervin Mbakera, have shown consistency and zeal in the 2025/26 football season.

Having played 17 matches to date, Mariental Sports Club has amassed 35 points compared to their bitter competitors Young Brazilians FC, who are one point behind the log leaders.

Mariental Sports Club is yet to experience defeat in the ongoing campaign while archrival Young Brazilians have four losses.

The match scheduled at the J. Stephanus Stadium is anticipated to pull a huge crowd, as the two sides fight for ||Kharas region bragging rights and supremacy.

The objective of these two teams is entry into the country’s top-flight football league. If Mariental Sports Club continues its impressive run, it will be the first time in the history of Namibian football that a team from that town has reached the elite division.

Try Again FC, another team from Mariental currently sitting third on 31 points, will lock horns with Dates Eleven FC at the J. Stephanus Stadium on 28 March.

It will be a football festival at Keetmanshoop, while Celtic FC travel to Swakopmund to take on Blue Boys FC at the Mondesa stadium.

Celtic FC are eighth on 22 points with Blue Boys FC ninth on 16 points. O&L Ramblers are inches above the relegation zone, sitting tenth on 14 points. They will play a struggling Orlando Pirates SC.

The campaign by the ‘Sea Robbers’ has not been smooth, and football critics are suggesting that the black-and-white team, if not careful, will be demoted to the second division.

Orlando Pirates SC are languishing in the relegation zone as they are rock bottom with 12 points. The Sea Robbers need to collect points to avoid demotion to the second division. Friends FC will host City Boys FC at Rehoboth. Friends have tasted elite football in their club’s history, and returning to the top-flight league has been a challenge. They are sixth on 24 points, and City Boys FC are fourth on 28 points.

Oranjemund FC is another team struggling to move out of the relegation zone. Having amassed 14 points, the diamond boys’ future is bleak, and if the team’s management does not seek urgent intervention, it could kiss the SSFD goodbye.

Oranjemund FC will play Quiver FC at the J Stephanus Stadium. Quiver FC are fifth on the log with 26 points.
