BUSINESS mogul and politician Aaron Mushimba has died. He was 68.
Mushimba, who played a key role in several of Namibia’s largest black empowerment deals ranging from fishing to banking and construction, died in a Cape Town hospital yesterday morning.
Family spokesperson Utoni Nujoma, who is also the Minister of Justice, confirmed Mushimba’s death yesterday, saying the businessman was admitted at a Cape Town hospital three weeks ago for a back operation which caused complications.
Kovambo Nujoma, Mushimba’s sister and the former First Lady, who also confirmed the death said “it is a difficult time for us”.
Prominent lawyer, Gerson Hinda described the late Mushimba as a humble and experienced businessman.
“He is gone too soon. We were expecting him to recover. The Namibian business industry has lost a very experienced man. He was like a father to me. It is painful losing him. To his family, I wish them strength. May his soul rest in peace,” an emotional Hinda said today.
He was involved in the liberation struggle from the early 1960s, as the national organiser for Swapo inside the country, and was arrested and tortured several times by the apartheid authorities in the mid 1970s. Mushimba was later sentenced to death but released on appeal in 1977.
He is survived by his wife, four children and three grandchildren.
