FIRES at two businesses in different parts of the country have resulted in damage of millions of dollars yesterday.
Both fires – one in Windhoek and the other at Keetmanshoop – appear to have started early yesterday morning.
At around 02h00, a fire swept across the truck lot at the Seapride Foods facility in Windhoek’s Prosperita industrial area, engulfing nine trucks and a forklift. The initial damage was estimated at between N$15 million and N$20 million, according to company officials at the scene yesterday morning.
The Windhoek fire brigade was summoned and struggled for a few hours to contain the flames, which were only put out after the sun had already risen.
While the cause of the fire remains as yet unknown, an investigation is ongoing. At Keetmanshoop in the //Karas region yesterday morning, a fire allegedly started in the storeroom of Keetmanshoop Spar, and firefighters only managed to subdue the flames after lunchtime yesterday.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. Adjacent office buildings, meanwhile, were unaffected by the fire, but the retailer’s interior has been gutted, and the building has suffered extensive damage to the roof.
