Bursary fund for teachers

AN Education and Training Fund to provide bursaries for students who want to become mathematics, science and English high school teachers will soon be established in the Ohangwena Region.

Regional Education Director Josia Udjombala said the Fund will be launched on August 20. Udjombala said bursary holders would be contractually obliged to teach in the Ohangwena Region for five years after completion of their studies at the University of Namibia.”We need this Fund because … Vision 2030 aspires to a prosperous and industrialised Namibia, developed by her human resources, enjoying peace, harmony and political stability, but looking at the current level and quality of education, especially in the Ohangwena Region, one is tempted to ask whether Namibia is really ready to meet the challenges.”Udjombala said Ohangwena, like other northern regions, had failed to attract and retain teachers. He said teachers were not keen to serve in a region where newspapers were not supplied daily, where there were no good schools for their children, no private medical practitioners, and where recreational facilities were non-existent.Udjombala said bursaries would not only be awarded to students from Ohangwena.”A student from any other region, who wishes to train as a teacher in the field in which we have a need and who is willing …to teach at schools in Ohangwena after he or she has successfully completed their studies, will benefit from this fund,” he said.Anyone who wants to support the Fund can deposit money at the following account: Ondangwa First National Bank, Account number 62088120846, Branch Code 28-13-73, and then fax their deposit slips to 065-240190, for attention Mrs Saima P Ngulu.Udjombala said bursary holders would be contractually obliged to teach in the Ohangwena Region for five years after completion of their studies at the University of Namibia.”We need this Fund because … Vision 2030 aspires to a prosperous and industrialised Namibia, developed by her human resources, enjoying peace, harmony and political stability, but looking at the current level and quality of education, especially in the Ohangwena Region, one is tempted to ask whether Namibia is really ready to meet the challenges.”Udjombala said Ohangwena, like other northern regions, had failed to attract and retain teachers. He said teachers were not keen to serve in a region where newspapers were not supplied daily, where there were no good schools for their children, no private medical practitioners, and where recreational facilities were non-existent.Udjombala said bursaries would not only be awarded to students from Ohangwena.”A student from any other region, who wishes to train as a teacher in the field in which we have a need and who is willing …to teach at schools in Ohangwena after he or she has successfully completed their studies, will benefit from this fund,” he said.Anyone who wants to support the Fund can deposit money at the following account: Ondangwa First National Bank, Account number 62088120846, Branch Code 28-13-73, and then fax their deposit slips to 065-240190, for attention Mrs Saima P Ngulu.
