Budget postponed again

THE Ministry of Finance has requested the National Assembly to allow the postponement of the tabling of the national budget to Tuesday, 26 May.

The tabling was scheduled for tomorrow with the resumption of the seventh parliament.

In a statement issued on Friday, David Nahongandja, National Assembly spokesperson, said the tabling would no longer take place this week.

Members of parliament are scheduled to resume sitting on Tuesday after a break of almost two months after their inauguration in March this year.

The Namibian reported in March that the government has been using funds that were not authorised through the normal approval of the national budget by parliament.

This is mainly due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Constitution dictates the Ministry of Finance must present the country’s expenditure plans and revenue forecast at the end of each financial year, which falls on 31 March.

Treasury had said, to avoid the interruption of government services, funds of up to 33% of the 2019/20 budget would be released.

That is equal to at least N$21 billion, if calculated on last year’s N$66,5 billion budget.
