IT is unbelievable that after 17 years of independence many Namibians are still using the “inhumane” bucket-toilet system, a Swapo MP from the Hardap Region has told the National Council.
Theo Diergaardt said although Local Government and Housing Minister John Pandeni expressed concern about the bucket-toilet system when he motivated his Ministry’s vote in the 2005/2006 Budget, many towns in the South still use bucket toilets. He said in the 2007/2008 financial year a study found that the system was still in use at places such as Kalkveld, Tses, Aus, Berseba and Koës, said Diergaardt. He said he could not understand why the study did not include Rehoboth and Mariental, since more than 400 households in Rehoboth still use the bucket system. He was speaking during debate on the N$518 million allocated to the Ministry of Local Government and Housing in the 2007/2005 Budget.
