Breakthrough for Walvis Bay port

THE port of Walvis Bay has succeeded in handling the first major bulk cargo shipment destined for Zambia when a vessel carrying 3 000 tonnes of rice arrived on Tuesday last week.

Through dedication and hard work on the part of the operational personnel, the shipment was offloaded by late afternoon the next day. The offloading of the shipment in just two days was a major achievement for the port and underlines the role of NamPort as a leading Port Authority in Africa.The handling of this shipment was the result of marketing and sales efforts of NamPort and its partners in the Walvis Bay Corridor Group.Since the opening of the Sesheke bridge over the Zambezi River at Katima Mulilo in April last year, there has been an increase of trade between Namibia and Zambia.NamPort has previously stated that it is committed to the development of the market for imports and exports in Zambia via the port of Walvis Bay.In line with this, the Walvis Bay Corridor Group has set up an office in Zambia to support the effort of business development in that country.The local business development representative in Zambia will provide support to stakeholders in the logistics chain to promote the concept of a one-stop shop through the Walvis Bay Corridor Group.The port of Walvis Bay offers many advantages for importers and exporters, as it is strategically located for trade between southern Africa, Europe and the Americas.The offloading of the shipment in just two days was a major achievement for the port and underlines the role of NamPort as a leading Port Authority in Africa.The handling of this shipment was the result of marketing and sales efforts of NamPort and its partners in the Walvis Bay Corridor Group.
