Boxing put Namibia on world map: Kaperu

Namibia Boxing Federation (NABF) Secretary-General Joe Kaperu said boxing as a sports code has undoubtedly put Namibia on the world map since the country’s independence in 1990.

Speaking to Nampa on Thursday, Kaperu said the independence of Namibia has allowed Namibian boxers to compete in the East, South and Central Africa Amateur Associations’ (SESCAABA) competition.’We did very well, especially when the country hosted SESCAABA in 1990,’ he said, adding that during that tournament, boxers such as Harry Simon, Albertus Katiti and Sacky Shivute clinched their very first gold medals.Asked if boxing was predominantly a black sport before independence, Kaperu said there were a number of white boxers, especially in Windhoek and Walvis Bay. – Nampa
