Boxing club uplifts boxers in Katutura

GOLDEN Boxing Club, situated in Katutura, was formed by a group of committed ex-boxers and targets young boxers who want to seriously take up the sport.

One of the club members, Benjamin Rebang, said the people who are heading the club have an intense love for the sport. The club was originally formed in May 2002 and had various names before being named the Golden Boxing Club.Previous names were Fight Forever Boxing Club then Namibia Boxing Club before Independence. It later changed to Forever Boxing Academy before it got the current name.Rebang says ex-boxers of the club identified the need for improving the deteriorating boxing standards in Namibia by volunteering to train upcoming boxers as well as beginners to revive the standard of the sport.Golden Boxing Club is a non-profitable organisation and is feeding the national team with both boxers as well as coaches on a regular basis.”Some of our products (boxers) are already forming the core of our national team. Our training sessions are held from Mondays to Fridays and in doing so, the club believe that they keep our youth away from the social evils of drugs, alcohol abuse and unprotected sex which can lead to HIV-AIDS,” he said.Rebang said that boxers are kept fit to promote the sport and primarily for their own health. The training venue is located just behind the Katutura Community Hall in Katutura. The club currently has more than 34 boxers, about half of them training on a full-time basis.”Most of our boxers only have records of not more than five fights, while most started their careers in 2004.Almost 98 per cent of them are unemployed youth, but we are planning to attract school-going youth,” he said.He said the club is also running a training session for children under the age of 15, which starts at 16h00 daily.”We are confident that we will produce outstanding world champions in the future,” he added.Benjamin Rebang, Dawid Utsile and Ricky Tshabalala are responsible for the day-to-day business of the club, while Erastus Dawid and Stephanus ‘Steve’ Mogotsi advise and assist the club.People who want to join the club can contact Rebang at 081 255 6777.The club was originally formed in May 2002 and had various names before being named the Golden Boxing Club.Previous names were Fight Forever Boxing Club then Namibia Boxing Club before Independence. It later changed to Forever Boxing Academy before it got the current name.
