Border take first day honours

BORDER took the honours on the opening day of their Sunfoil 3-Day Cup match against Namibia in East London yesterday after they dismissed Namibia for 157 and then reached 233 for four wickets at stumps on the first day.

Border sent Namibia in to bat after winning the toss and the visitors immediately struggled after losing some early wickets.

Zane Green (7), Jean Bredenkamp (5), Craig Williams (0) and Stephen Baard (12) all went cheaply as Namibia crashed to 26 for four wickets after 11 overs.

Niko Davin led a middle order revival but he received little support and when Jan Frylinck was out for three Namibia were struggling at 41 for five wickets.

Namibian captain Sarel Burger however joined Davin and they revived Namibia’s innings with a 75-run partnership for the sixth wicket.

Burger was eventually out for 23, while Davin continued to attack Border’s batsmen before he was dismissed for a top-score of 85 which came off 73 balls and included 11 fours.

The lower order did not contribute much more as the whole team was out for 157 off only 38 overs.

Paphama Fojela was Border’s best bowler, taking four wickets for 39 runs off 13 overs.

Sarel Burger made an early breakthrough in Border’s innings, dismissing Mkhululi Calana (0) and Gerhardt Abrahams (5) cheaply, but Gionne Koopman and Kabelo Sekhukhune put Border in charge with a century partnership for the third wicket.

Namibian all rounder Craig Williams finally made the breakthrough with two wickets in quick succession.

He dismissed Sekhukhune for 74 and Jerry Nqolo for two to restrict Border to 137 for four wickets.

Marco Marais, however, joined Koopman to put Border in charge with an unbroken partnership of 96 runs for the fifth wicket, as Koopmen reached 81 not out and Marais 65 not out at stumps.

The match continues at Buffalo Park on Friday and Saturday, while the two sides will play a 50-over limited overs match on Sunday at the same venue.
