Blood transfusion service calls for donations ahead of Easter weekend

The Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia (NamBTS) has urged members of the public to donate blood, and is emphasising that a single donation can save up to three lives.

“We continue to build a national culture of voluntary, non-remunerated donors and urge those with especially the O type of blood to donate blood to help save the lives of patients such as mothers who bleed excessively during childbirth, cancer patients as part of their treatment, and patients who are involved in trauma incidents and those who require various surgeries among others,” the organisation said in a statement this week.

It noted that despite advances in medicine, there is no substitute for human blood, making donations critical to saving lives.

“Donating blood does not weaken the immune system. The body quickly replenishes the donated blood, maintaining immune function,” the NamBTS noted.

The organisation said it continues to promote a culture of voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation and is encouraging eligible individuals aged between 16 and 70, weighing at least 50 kilograms and in good health, to participate.

“Join Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia, during the month of Easter by walking in, rolling up your sleeve and being a hero in your community,” its statement concluded.
