Black rhino sanctuary sharpens protection efforts

Gondwana Collection Namibia and ERP Conservation Foundation recently completed an intensive anti-poaching training programme to bolster security ahead of the new Black Rhino Sanctuary’s opening.

The specialised training brought together a group of in-house rangers and trainees, equipping them with advanced skills required to protect one of Africa’s most endangered species.

Delivered jointly by ERP and Gondwana, the programme was designed to combine theoretical grounding with highly practical, real-world application, reflecting the realities of modern wildlife protection in high-risk environments.

Key training modules included scenario-based exercises and real-life simulations, allowing participants to respond to potential poaching threats under controlled but realistic conditions.

Rangers were also trained in emergency response and trauma management, including first aid techniques and K9 field medicine, ensuring both human and canine units are prepared to operate safely and effectively in the field.

These components are critical in remote conservation areas where immediate medical assistance may not be readily available.

The training team facilitating the programme brings extensive experience from military and tactical backgrounds, with specialised expertise in anti-poaching operations, field medicine and risk management.

This initiative forms part of Gondwana Collection Namibia’s broader conservation strategy, reinforcing its long-term commitment to biodiversity protection, sustainable tourism and responsible wildlife stewardship.

As preparations continue for the arrival of black rhinos at the sanctuary, the successful completion of this training marks a significant milestone in ensuring that the necessary skills, readiness and resilience are firmly in place to safeguard these iconic animals for generations to come.

As work and developments of the sanctuary continue, information will be made available via the Gondwana Collection Namibia website.
