Bikers with hearts for charity

Bikers often carry the stigma of being mean and vicious, but not in Namibia. As a matter of fact, bikers are in many cases the ones who get on their iron horses and ride for others.

This past weekend several bikers from various motorcycle clubs gathered at the the Old Wheelers Club and Museum in Olympia, Windhoek, to show off their solidarity (and bikes) to raise funds for charitable causes.

This year’s charity was the We Care Foundation, a non-governmental organisation that betters the lives of senior citizens and children.

Local bikers come together once a year to raise funds for an organisation or group that helps others, said Harley Davidson sponsoring dealer Guilliaume Kruger at the bikers’ show.

This is an opportunity to give back to the community, Kruger told Top Revs.

“It is not about the motorcycles. We display the motorcycles, you meet the people (bikers and their leathers), but they are all a bunch of nice guys,” Kruger said.

The term “leathers” refers to their waistcoats or jackets decorated with biker regalia, and the clubs they represent. This piece of garment is a testimony of their role, dedication and commitment towards their clubs.

Kruger’s words, “they are a bunch of nice guys” talks to their actions.

Most bikers are prominent business people that spend their free time going on road trips to either raise funds for charities or show off their bikes.

It is not always about raising funds, but also about collecting non-perishable foods or toys around Christmas to bring joy and love to those in need.

Bikers might look intimidating, but their hearts and minds tell a different tale.

To join a bikers club in Namibia, Kruger advised to get a bike that suits your needs.

Street bikes, cruisers or off-road, or touring bikes all have their own niche in the market, he said.
