A DISPLAY of safe driving was part of Roessing Uranium Mine’s celebration of three decades in production.
Spectators in Swakopmund witnessed last weekend how drivers of buses and trucks manoeuvred their huge vehicles around obstacles and into small spaces to clinch top honours in the annual Driver Competition with the slogan ‘Safe Driving Is No Accident’. Frances Anderson, Roessing’s Manager of Occupational Health, Safety, Environment and Risk Management, summarised the consequences that a lapse of concentration by a driver may cause: “Without food, one can survive for three to four weeks; without water, one can survive for three to four days; without shelter in extreme conditions one can survive three to four hours; but [by] not being alert at the wheel of your vehicle, survival is only three to four seconds.”The overall winner was S Jordaan from Roessing Uranium. In the category for trucks, D de Koe (Wesbank Transport) won the first prize followed by F van Wyk (Roessing) and L Grundeling (TransNamib).Jordaan was also first in the competition for bus drivers with Roessing colleagues C Prinsloo and F van Wyk in second and third positions.Van Wyk was awarded first prize in the theoretical K53 test.B.Gariseb (TransNamib) won the mystery prize.BP Namibia, Barloworld Equipment, TransNamib, Scania SA, Truck Namibia, Wesbank Transport, Deutsches Haus, Cymot, Steckles Toyota, Sunshine Tours and Arandis Services all contributed towards the event.Frances Anderson, Roessing’s Manager of Occupational Health, Safety, Environment and Risk Management, summarised the consequences that a lapse of concentration by a driver may cause: “Without food, one can survive for three to four weeks; without water, one can survive for three to four days; without shelter in extreme conditions one can survive three to four hours; but [by] not being alert at the wheel of your vehicle, survival is only three to four seconds.”The overall winner was S Jordaan from Roessing Uranium. In the category for trucks, D de Koe (Wesbank Transport) won the first prize followed by F van Wyk (Roessing) and L Grundeling (TransNamib).Jordaan was also first in the competition for bus drivers with Roessing colleagues C Prinsloo and F van Wyk in second and third positions.Van Wyk was awarded first prize in the theoretical K53 test.B.Gariseb (TransNamib) won the mystery prize.BP Namibia, Barloworld Equipment, TransNamib, Scania SA, Truck Namibia, Wesbank Transport, Deutsches Haus, Cymot, Steckles Toyota, Sunshine Tours and Arandis Services all contributed towards the event.
