Big Brother Africa: Weekend Watch

Big Brother Africa: Weekend Watch

THE housemates were shocked out of their socks, no-one more so than Big B – Bertha – at the sight of fake evictees Kwaku and Ofunneka jumping out of a box on Thursday.

Hallelujah, her prayers had been answered, or had they? After screaming for a full 20 minutes, the housemates finally calmed down enough to find out what the latest twist in the never-ending saga that is Big Brother Africa was all about. Discovering that the Ofunnekwa (Kwaku and Ofunneka) had been sequestered in the Penthouse since Sunday, had Bertha slyly eyeing the Nigerian mamma up and down.No doubt wondering if K might just have transferred some of his manly affections to his fellow West African? Well, sorry to disappoint, but no such luck. The two share a bond all right, but it’s based more on a shared similar background than on steamy, can’t-keep-my-hands-off-you kind of lust! CONFRONTATION I was slightly disappointed in the hunky Ghanaian, I really thought that his stay in the Penthouse might have taught him a thing or two about the alliances he had formed in the house. It does not take a genius to figure out that he is backing a losing team.Instead of seeing his second entrance to the house as something of a fresh start, Kwaku decided to jump right back into his former ‘Untouchable’ alliance, cosying up to Big B and gossiping with Riot Girl Lerato in the garden.Of course, Ofunneka was doing the same with her camp! After telling Maureen point blank that she did not like her, Bertha seemed emboldened by Kwaku’s return.Cosying up to K, Bertha and Maureen rehashed the whole episode, with a slightly tipsy Maureen trying to clear the air.The whole exercise proved to be quite pointless – as the two were no better off than when they started.Lerato then also took the opportunity to express herself on Maureen’s leadership style, implying that as a leader she was more interested in catering to the whims of her man Code and reasserting her position as head of house than actually putting in the legwork. As much as a I hate to, I’m inclined to agree with Lerato there, if the presentation of the weekly task was anything to go by, Maureen as a leader is about as inspiring as waiting for toast to pop out of a toaster. The task lacked cohesion, unity and most importantly any level of entertainment value.Richiana used the opportunity to interpret their two-timing relationship with a dance. What was meant to be a moving and passionate dance by two doomed lovers fell completely flat! Even worse though, was Lerato and Bertha’s interpretation and performance, taken from Winnie Mandela’s autobiography about her arrest, detention and stint in solitary confinement. All Lerato did was read from the book while Bertha supposedly tried to act out the episode.I could hardly bear to watch. It was really awful.TAKING THE REINS Anyways, hopefully Richard will prove to be a better leader. After winning the ‘Shoot the Hoop’ challenge on Friday, when housemates had to see who could send a basketball swishing through the hoop the most times, Richard will finally have his chance to have a say in the nomination process. As one viewer on the SMS strap put it, why not send Richard to the penthouse all alone and have his wife waiting there for him. That should certainly be more entertaining than Maude’s (Code and Maureen) recent visit.DISHING THE DIRT Listening to Code exaggerating and twisting the truth the next day – on his and Maureen’s Penthouse visit – was way more interesting than actually watching the two in the Penthouse.Yes – they had dinner, yes – they took a bath and yes – the two apparently slept in the buff, but watching the two picking at each other’s faces and hanging on to one another was enough to make me switch over to the Al Jazeera channel. It was that uninteresting.According to the ever-gossiping and trash-talking Code, he was walking around in the buff for most of the night! The ever-guzzling guy certainly took full advantage of the drinks available in the penthouse – he guzzled and guzzled and guzzled some more – making this weekend yet another one of his three-day drinking sprees.Meanwhile, in Bertha land all was not well. After placing extreme pressure on Kwaku, Bertha demanded to know who he would choose between her and Meryl.Eish, the girl is moving a mile a minute.Kwaku mumbled that it didn’t make sense to be going there at this stage, and later spoke to Lerato about feeling pressured by Bertha.Saying that Bertha had moved from gear one to gear five, Kwaku alluded that if forced to choose, he’d prefer to be involved with Meryl. He felt Bertha was being unfair as no one knew what lay outside the house “the life I live here [inside the house] is totally different from my life outside”.Ouch! But then again, that is what you get from giving a guy like Kwaku an ultimatum.Seems the Zimbo is quite a bimbo when it comes to relationships. She might be capable and accomplished when it comes to other areas in her life, but she can sure learn a thing or three from the 21-year-old Meryl when it comes to how to handle a man.SULKABOUT After storming off to bed in a huff, she did something of a sulkabout the following morning. She told Kwaku that she would now prefer their relationship to go back to what it had been initially. He told her that he felt used and manipulated by her.Bertha, who has remarked that she prefers her men to do the chasing, has done exactly the opposite by being the main aggressor in her “relationship” with Kwaku. She was the one to muscle in on Meryl’s territory when she told him how she felt about him and as Kwaku himself has said, she was the one always jumping into his bed! Is Bertha seemingly using Kwaku as just another tactic and manipulation ploy? Is she so terrified that he just might choose Meryl over her? Well, considering the fact that she made a point of jumping into his bed on Sunday, it’s a very real possibility.* By the way, Big Brother Africa’s 24-hour channel is now moving from channel 37 to channel 198.As part of DStv’s channel shuffle, all the action will now be taking place on channel 198.Tune in to see it all go down. With only seven housemates remaining and nominations again tonight – the game is on.Discovering that the Ofunnekwa (Kwaku and Ofunneka) had been sequestered in the Penthouse since Sunday, had Bertha slyly eyeing the Nigerian mamma up and down.No doubt wondering if K might just have transferred some of his manly affections to his fellow West African?
