Following the recent deaths of Ingrid Maasdorp (5), Roswinds Fabianu (6) and Beyoncé !Kharuxas (15) at Okahandja, award-winning musician Venaune Kandukira, known as Big Ben, has released a new song called ‘Stranger Danger’.
The track is meant to teach children about staying safe and avoiding strangers.
In an interview, Kandukira described the track as an educational tool created to teach children to avoid strangers and refrain from accepting sweets.
Currently, the lyrics are in Otjiherero. However, the artist said he has plans to translate the song into different native languages to reach a wider audience.
“When reading news about all these abductions of young girls and boys, I asked myself, what can I do as a musician, because most of the time we look at the government and expect them to do something. As a musician, I decided to contribute through my art,” he said.
Kandukira urged fellow musicians to jump on board and assist with translating the song into different languages.
“This is an open call; any interested artist can approach me and we can do the song in their native language. We all have a duty as musicians because children love music. The change starts with us and not only with lawmakers,” he added.
Kandukira said he has approached the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture to endorse the song for it to be made available to all schools.
