Biden exits US presidential race

United States president Joe Biden has said in a statement that he is stepping down as a candidate in the 2024 election, and that he will speak to his nation “later this week” about his decision.

Dozens of congressional Democrats have publicly urged the 81-year-old president to step aside after a shaky debate performance last month against Republican challenger Donald Trump, who is 78 years old.

In a follow-up message, Biden said he is endorsing vice president Kamala Harris to be his party’s candidate in the presidential election.
