BH found with suspected diamonds

THE Oshana police have confiscated suspected diamonds from businessman Benjamin Hauwanga, who is commonly known as BH.

Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa, the Oshana regional police commander, confirmed the confiscation to The Namibian yesterday saying Hauwanga was found with the stones but was not arrested.

“But the stones were sent to the laboratory for tests,”Kashihakumwa said.

Unconfirmed reports said Hauwanga was first held by the police in Windhoek in connection with the stones, but they let him go after he had convinced them that they were not genuine diamonds.

The Namibian also understands that the case has not yet been reported to the police Protected Resources Unit (PRU).

Contacted for comment, Hauwanga said the stones are not ‘diamonds’ but beads. He said he owns a jewellery shop in the North and that he was taking the beads there.

The stones, he further said, are cut and polished at a shop in the North before they are used to make traditional bead necklaces.

“We buy the stones from Gobabis,” he said, adding that he does not know why the police confiscated his stones.

He could however not comment any further, inviting The Namibian to a detailed interview today.
