Good friendships are difficult to come by and they’re even more difficult to maintain.
But once you find that friend you love and adore, there are a few things you should consider about yourself to make sure your friendship goes on forever and ever after.
Always be critical of your friends’ choices. This does not mean that you have to be judging of your friend, but if your friend is about to head over to the next fashion week wearing a costume with feathers, maybe it’s best to offer your solid opinion, because you love them that much, right? You’re going to be asked “does this outfit look good on me?” So don’t lie. Also note that you should not take the tough love thing too far.
Be happy for them – even if they get excited about menial things. They just scored braids for a hairstyle they’ve been looking for since forever? Give them a thumbs up. They just passed the module they’ve been struggling with for the term? An ovation won’t hurt. They just got into a relationship and you’re single? Don’t be bitter. Celebrate it!
Sacrifice. Just as relationships require compromise, so do friendships. Do something for them, even if it might be a little inconvenient for you. “OK, I will buy you the watch for your birthday even if I wanted it.” You’re in a situation where you don’t like your friend’s partner. Let them know! This would be more effective if you didn’t steal anyone’s boyfriend/girlfriend after they break up, just for clarity’s sake.
You have insecurities. Your friends have insecurities. Sometimes they show in public. But don’t be embarrased of your friend when they do. Guide them. Love them. Appreciate them.
The Weekender reader Feliciana Amadora Do Ceu said it best: “Remember, fake friends are there to destroy one’s happiness so look out for real friends who are willing to fall with you when things go wrong”.
