Bees buzz up the economy

LONDON – Britain will earmark 10 million pounds (US$14,6 million) for research into the main threats to bees, butterflies and other insect pollinators, whose decline jeopardises agricultural production, the government announced yesterday.

‘Bees are really important to our economy, to biodiversity,’ Environment Secretary Hilary Benn told BBC Radio Four.
‘With one in three mouthfuls of the food that we eat coming from crops that are pollinated by insects … this is a real wake-up call for the world,’ he added.
British beekeepers have urged the government to fund research into what they say is potentially a bigger threat to humanity than the current financial crisis.
