ANOTHER workshop on Black Economic Empowerment was held in the Windhoek yesterday, where some 40 participants from the public and private sectors turned up to discuss the now familiar topic.

BEE seeks to distribute the country’s wealth among previously disadvantaged Namibians. Currently Namibia’s wealth is controlled by a mere 15 per cent of the population. The half-day workshop was organised by the Office of the Prime Minister and the Namibia Preferential Procurement Council (NPPC) – a non-profit organisation set up by the mining industry, which is lobbying the Government to put in place the long-awaited BEE policy framework.Addressing the participants, Prime Minister Nahas Angula said it was imperative that measures be put in place to balance and synchronise the skewed socio-economic conditions.Invited speaker Jeffrey Ndumo, who is the Director of BEE Partnerships in the South African Department of Trade and Industry, gave a presentation that touched on aspects of BEE in South Africa and Namibia. His presentation was entitled, ‘Broad-based BEE and the codes of good practice’.Currently Namibia’s wealth is controlled by a mere 15 per cent of the population. The half-day workshop was organised by the Office of the Prime Minister and the Namibia Preferential Procurement Council (NPPC) – a non-profit organisation set up by the mining industry, which is lobbying the Government to put in place the long-awaited BEE policy framework.Addressing the participants, Prime Minister Nahas Angula said it was imperative that measures be put in place to balance and synchronise the skewed socio-economic conditions.
